Warrior Nun is a Fantasy series on Netflix, and adaptation of Ben Dunn’s Manga series, created for Netflix by Simon Barry. I was part of the Lighting LookDev team with the amazing The Embassy VFX company based in Vancouver. I Had to take CG elements from the other departments and run them through Houdini to light, shade and render them.
I would use LIDAR scan data from on set to help build my scenes, along with onset made HDRI’s, reference images and plates, to get a good sense of where the lights should be places. When trying to keep it realistic and accurate, some artistic liberation’s had to be made for some shots, Mainly for the shows Wraiths. They were made up of multiple volumetric, attached to vellum like meshes to give them a kind of jellyfish flowing feel to the. Since they where volumetric, when lighting them into a scene artistic liberties where used to make them look more prominent and more fearsome. after all, wraiths don’t exist in the real world so it was up to us as a team and individuals to give them a unique look.
